Ms. Fink’s Favourite Books!
(There are so many great books being written. I will try to update this list as often as I can)
(There are so many great books being written. I will try to update this list as often as I can)
Grade One/Two
No David books – (various titles like ‘David goes to school’) by David Shannon
(not a lot of dialogue but great for reading with expression and enjoying a humorous book)
Froggy – Any Froggy book by Jonathan London is a favourite and kids want to read them over and over again!
Franklin – There are too many titles and Franklin adventures to list but students enjoy the books and know the characters from the T.V. show (Paulette Bourgeois)
Alphabet book – The Z was zapped by Chris Van Allsburg is a higher level vocabulary predicting story
The Two Bad Ants – Another Chris Van Allsburg which is humorous (told from an ant’s perspective)
Diary of a Worm
Diary of a Fly
Diary of a Spider -
Stories all told from the annelid (yes I looked this up) insect and arachnid perspective in diary form
The Dumb Bunnies – Dav Pilkey – Students love the antics of the bunnies and the pictures – I have bought these so many times because students love them to death!
Non fiction books – Consider obtaining books about ‘Sharks’, ‘The Titanic’, ‘ Tornados’, ‘Wild animals’ to engage boy readers who enjoy books that can be browsed for information
Grade 2 and 3 series:
Roald Dahl books are great for 'Reading together' books –
The Minpins – beginning chapter book with lots of pictures and adventure
The Enormous Crocodile – beginning chapter book with coloured pictures
Esio Trot – which is tortoise spelled backwards – fun book for teaching word play
(If a student is highly motivated then move on to some of the more famous titles like ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach)
Danny the Champion of the World - a lesser known Roald Dahl book but a nice story of a father/son adventure
Chris Van Allsburg harder books – Jumanji, The Garden of Ben Gazzazi, The Stranger, Probundity - any of his books are a little strange but interesting - ( Did you know...he always hides a little dog in all his books...they are pretty hard to find!)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid – you may need to rent the movie as I did to learn what the “cheese touch” is and how to avoid it. This series is a great book with boys…especially those that gravitate to the gross!
Arthur series – Marc Brown – too many titles to list but there are regular picture books as well as chapter books – students will know the characters from the T.V. show (did you know that author Marc Brown hides his children’s names ‘Tolon’ , ‘Tucker’ and ‘Eliza’ in his books somewhere)
Flat Stanley – this is a series about the adventures of a little boy name Stanley Lambchop
Owls in the Family – Farley Mowat – an adventure story that engages both boys and girls
My Father's Dragon - Ruth Stiles Gannet
Little House on the Prairie - Laura Ingalls Wilder
Little House on the Prairie - Laura Ingalls Wilder
Mrs.
Sproat’s Favourites – Guaranteed to be a hit with Grade Ones and Twos
New additions Question Boy meets little Miss Know it all by Peter Catalanotto
'A' is for Musk Oxen by Erin Cabatingan
Elephant
and Piggie books by Mo Willems – There are several in this series. They are short, funny, and an easy read.
Pigeon
books by Mo Willems – There are a few in this series (e.g., “Don’t Let the
Pigeon Stay up Late”). More words than
Elephant & Piggie books – but very fun to read.
Knuffle
Bunny and Knuffle Bunny Too by Mo Willems – Longer story, great pictures. Adults and kids will enjoy both books. There is also now available “Knuffle Bunny
Free” which is a touching end to this trilogy.
Goldilocks
and the Three Dinosaurs by Mo Willems – Can a family of dinosaurs trick Goldie
into being their dinner?? -- another good one by Willems
Fly Guy
books by Ted Arnold – There are several in this series. Boys really enjoy, but my girls also got into
them. Good for Grade Two level reader.
The
Pencil and The Runaway Dinner by Alan Ahlberg – Two very creative and funny
stories.
The
Book that Eats People by John Perry – The title alone should be enough to make
you want to open the book – if you dare!
An
Undone Fairy Tale by Ian Lendler – A Fabulous interactive story.
Do Not
Open This Book by Michaela Muntean – Another great interactive story.
A Book
by Mordicai Gerstein – The illustrations in this book are different than any
you have seen.
Once
Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude by Kevin O’Malley – Hilarious telling of a fairy
tale from a boy’s point of view and a girl’s point of view.
Bad
Kitty series by Nick Bruel – The first book goes through the alphabet in a very
funny way. Kids love the other books
with Bad Kitty in them (e.g., “Happy Birthday Bad Kitty”). There are also some chapter books with Bad
Kitty which would be great for grade twos.
Who is
Melvin Bubble? By Nick Bruel – Get to know Melvin Bubble from the people who
know him best.
Rhyming
Dust Bunnies by Jan Thomas – The title alone should get any reader
curious. Great book for grade one
kids. Funny illustrations.
